Basic Principles for Website Design

Professional web designing is a skill best managed by professionals and takes years of experience to master. However, if you would like to build a website for fun or to gain experience, website design hinges on a few parameters of design, ease of use, and download speed. Here are the basics:

Design

Logically, one of the most important aspects of website design is the design. Principles in art and simplicity can make a website succeed, whereas glaring colors and difficult-to-read fonts can drive away business. Therefore, website design should be kept as simple as possible while still maintaining some interest and soothing colors. One way to accomplish a soothing site design is to use a border in greens, blues or soft yellows while maintaining the text areas in white or cream. This provides some interest while making the text areas stand out in an easy-to-read format (in a traditional serif or sans serif font — no highly stylized font in web design allowed for body text).

Ease of Use

Another important factor in web design is making the website user-friendly. Tabs at the top of the website, right beneath the website header are the most widely accepted area for searching within the website. Many sites also offer a search section near the top of the site. Log in buttons can be located in the tabs or on the side, but they are always best near the top.

Download Speed

Finally, most users do not wish to wait for any site to download, and with so many sites offering the same services as yours, it is very important that your site’s download speed be quick enough to keep customers from leaving your site to check out someone else’s. Therefore, ensuring that your data size is small will increase download speed to an acceptable speed.

Website design is a multi-faceted profession; however, some simple basics like design, ease and speed can help you design your first website.
